bulbs and the one that got away

I bought some hyacinth bulbs last year and this is how they've done. (Please ignore the filthy windows!) These are the pink ones.

These are the purple ones - not much difference between them, is there?

These are the red ones.

And these are the white ones - they're a wee bitty further on than this now (I took these photos last Friday).

I was a bit worried that all those hyacinths would be really powerful together scent-wise but they're not. The smell is absolutely glorious!

We've also had success with an amaryllis plant that I got out of Aldi's for half price - all of £1.49.

I'm not really much of a plant person - I like them well enough but I'm not that good at looking after them. I'm obviously not bad at looking after hyacinths and amaryllises! Go me. :o)

Around this time every year, I seem to post a similar photo. This is Christmas decoration that wins "the one that got away" prize this year.

This is the dining room door out to the garden. We're in this room every single day - in fact, we eat all our meals in here! I don't know how we didn't spot it earlier! There's always one! LOL

  1. Lovely bulbs & I especially love hyacinths, but I don't have much luck with them. My one that got away was the front door wreath which I'd forgotten about till the new year. Take care.

    1. I'm really pleased at how well the hyacinth bulbs grew. I totally expected them to not grow! I'm glad I'm not the only one who has elusive Christmas decorations! :oD

  2. I haven't bought any indoor bulbs at all this year and now you've mentioned hyacinths I feel I should rectify that as soon as possible. I know some people can't stand the scent of them but I love it. Nature's own air freshener.

    1. Our house smells fabulous at the moment because of the hyacinths. They're definitely great as air fresheners! :o)

  3. Hahaha -- we always have one rogue decoration every year too -- must be universal, like dryers that eat socks LOL. Beautiful flowers!

    1. There always seems to be a sock missing when I do the washing. It's usually stuck to a shirt in the ironing pile! :oD

  4. Hyacinths make me sneeze! And yes, there is always one decoration that escapes until after the boxes are packed and put back in the loft!

    1. Yes, our decorations are all up in the loft too so this angel just got put on top of the Christmas CDs box which didn't go up. No way was I going to manhandle the ladder for the sake of one angel! :o)

  5. Your hyacinths are so pretty! I sometimes buy one at Easter time, but I hardly ever see them available any other time of year. I would definitely get some if they were. I tried to regrow an amaryllis from last Christmas this year but it never sent up a bud. I was disappointed. It had leaves and I really thought it would flower. I bought a small ivy plant the other day, just for fun. I'll probably kill it before the month is over. :)

    1. Yes, Douglas decided to just water last year's amaryllis but it only grew leaves and no bud appeared. I suspect there's some fancy manoeuvering needed to get them to flower again. Good luck with your ivy plant! :o)

  6. For a 'not a plant person' you have some lovely bulbs. As for the Christmas dec which got left behind, I found 2 small cat stockings hanging in the corner where we feed our 2 cats. All packed away now.

    1. The only house plants I usually have any success with are things that don't need watered a lot like cactus, spider plants and rubber plants. Other things that need special care would not survive long at all! :o)

  7. Lovely flowers but I'm really not a fan of the scent. Luckily my nose is always so blocked that I can barely smell a thing!
And my "one that got away" is the Christmas tree whose needles seem to still be all over the floor. I'm suspicious that the Christmas tree is still hiding behind the curtains or something!! :D

    1. Maybe Tilly has part of your tree hidden away somewhere and pulls it out to play with when you're not there! LOL

  8. There is always one decoration that gets away isn't there! I am not good with houseplants either, kalanchoes do well for me though as they are succulents, but you seem to be doing really well with your bulbs!! They look so pretty don't they, love the amaryllis especially!

    1. Thanks, Amy. The hyacinths have pretty much all gone over now. The amaryllis is beginning to look like it might go soon too. Oh well, they were lovely while they lasted! :o)

Thanks for taking the time to comment on my blethers. I really appreciate it. I do try to reply to everyone but sometimes life just gets in the way of that happening! :o)
