enjoy the moment

I was swimming along in the pool on Wednesday morning thinking about what I had to do with the rest of my day when it struck me that I wasn't exactly enjoying the moment.

What do I mean by that? Well, I was so busy thinking about what I had to do when I got home that I wasn't enjoying the swim. I *was* enjoying the swim but I wasn't paying attention to the enjoyment.

I then got to thinking about other times that I didn't put any "effort" into just enjoying the moment and I realised I do it all the time.

For example, when I'm eating my breakfast and drinking my first mug of tea of the day - am I enjoying the breakfast & tea? Well, sure. But I'm again thinking of whatever I have to do that day. I'm not concentrating on enjoying the moment.

I'm not saying it's bad to plan my day or to know the best way to sew the next bag I'm planning or even to go over the songs for Singers in the pool as I swim along but surely, if I'm doing something I enjoy it's almost a waste of enjoyment to not enjoy the moment.

Since Wednesday I've been trying to enjoy the moment more. Even when I was doing things where my mind would normally wander, I tried not to let it.

When I was driving, I'd try to enjoy the drive - and the music coming out of my CD player - rather than get annoyed at the plonkers cutting me up or undertaking.

Even when I was doing the ironing this morning, I tried to enjoy the moment. I'm not saying I enjoyed doing the ironing - who does? - but I did enjoy the satisfaction when it was finished! :o)

This afternoon I was crocheting more hexagons for the blankie I'm making. As I crocheted round and round - hexagon and hexagon?? - I concentrated on enjoying the moment and not on anything else.

In all the above examples, I was pleased at how calm I felt. Maybe it was just the fact that I wasn't thinking "I have to do this and then that and then …" but I like to think that enjoying the moment was having the calming effect.

So my January 29th Resolution is to enjoy the moment! :o)

a spotty bag

I made another bag from an old pair of jeans today.

Actually, that's not the whole truth. I unpicked a bag I had started on Monday which I wasn't at all happy with and re-made the bag from scratch.

I like it much better now!

Here's the front -

the inside -

and the back -

I love it! :o)

Happy Birthday, Rabbie!

Today is the birthday of Scotland's national poet, Rabbie Burns. 251 today! Happy birthday, Rabbie!

Here's one of my very own favourite Burns' songs sung by Eddi Reader at the Burns An' A' That festival, Culzean Castle, May 9 2003.

And just in case you want to join in, here are the words. :o)

A Red, Red Rose.
O my Luve's like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June:
O my Luve's like the melodie,
That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare-thee-weel, my only Luve!
And fare-thee-weel, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' 'twere ten thousand mile!

more places I want to be!

I so want to be somewhere when this happens. I wouldn't know the steps but you can bet I'd take part! :oD

I'd be okay at this one - at least I know the words - and can sing! :o)

doh a deer - and others

I found this on youtube and thought it was worth showing. Why? Because "The Sound of Music" is my all-time favourite film. I also love these "let's all go and dance in the station" things - as well as the "let's all go and stand still in the station" things.

Anyway, here it is -

And, if you feel the urge, when it's finished, click on some of the links along the bottom. There are quite a few "let's dance in the middle of the street" things.

wrist bag and sunset

I made this wee bag so I could take my purse, cards and mobile phone with me when I go to the swimming pool or at any other time I want to go out without taking my whole handbag with me.

I made it with the below-knee part of one leg of a pair of jeans and lined it, decorated it and made the handle and zip puller with some pink polka dot cotton which I bought in the pre-Christmas sales.

I used it this morning on my trip to the pool. It did the job perfectly! :o)

And here's tonight's sunset. Beautiful! :o)

Walter's in my purse!

I got a lovely card holder for my Christmas and, when I transferred my cards into it from my purse, my purse then became a bit of a problem. It was so used to having all those cards in it that it was way too big for only carrying the little cash I keep on me without it falling out.

I decided I needed a new one and searched the shops - and even looked online - for a purse that only held coins and notes with no spaces for cards. There were a few but none exactly as I wanted.

So I decided I would make my own. After a lot of thought about what I would like, I realised it was the same layout as my old purse but just slightly smaller so the coins wouldn't fall out and with no card spaces.

I drew plans and wrote down measurements and set to yesterday afternoon and made this - photos are a wee bitty fuzzy - sorry about that!

The outside:

The inside:

Where the money fits:

It's not perfect by any means - some of the notes are folding over when the purse is shut so it needs to be a wee bit bigger and more care will need to be taken to make sure the fabric doesn't have a right way/wrong way up - but, for my first attempt, I was really pleased with it.

Who, you might be wondering is Walter? See the face in the third photo? That's Sir Walter Scott whose face appears on the Bank of Scotland £10 note. I bet that doesn't last long - the note, not Walter's face! :oD

no music allowed!

We had our first Singers' rehearsal of 2010 this evening. Our conductor is determined that we're going to learn our stuff off by heart so we don't have any music at our concerts. Our initial reaction was a mixture of "Yikes!" and "Oh sure, we can do that - not!".

But, you know, we then sang through about 10 songs without the music and, although not note or word perfect, we did not too badly.

As the person who stands beside me said, holding the music is like holding a security blanket. You know fine you can live without it - you just don't particularly want to!

We'll be fine. Yes we will. Hopefully! :o)

at last!!

The snow we had for nearly 4 weeks has almost all gone.

We still have some patches of snow on the back grass but the roads are pretty much all cleared. Pavements and car parks can be a wee bit hairy depending on where they are. If they're able to be sunned on (!!), the snow will have melted. If they're hiding behind high walls - like the pavement outside my mum's house - they're still thick with ice.

Yesterday I actually managed to get to the swimming pool for the first time since Christmas. Oh my goodness it felt good! I was worried that my body was starting to creak again - no I'm not joking, I felt it creak!! - so being able to go swimming again has hopefully stopped that creaking in its tracks!

More snow is forecast but we'll deal with that if and when it arrives. For now, I'm just happy that the old stuff has gone. At last!

so hexagonally excited!

With help from the tutorial by Lucy on attic24, I learned how to crochet hexagons. I was so excited to be able to crochet something other than a granny square that I didn't stop at one. Before I knew it, I'd made 30 of them.

This afternoon, I decided to put them together to see how they looked. I didn't use Lucy's method of joining them as I'd already finished each hexagon - Lucy joins them up as she does the final round. (Can it be called a "round" if it's hexagonal?)

Anyway, I joined them by putting the hexagons right sides together and slip-stitching in the gaps and doing 3 chain in between each slip-stitch. If you don't crochet, that will mean diddly squat but that's okay. :o)

So here's what I've got so far. I LOVE IT!!

As Douglas pointed out, it's not all joined up. As I explained to him, if I make one more hexagon and put it into the space at the bottom right, I can join 3 sides at once. Much better to do 3 at once than one at a time. I don't think he knew what I was talking about - but that's okay as well! :o)

Since I took this photo, I've made another 7 hexagons. I know I have a lot more to make before the blankie is big enough to do anything with but I'm so excited by these little colourfulnesses that I don't think that will be a chore.

I'll keep you posted as the blankie grows. :o)

sunset photos

One good thing about cold weather is that it can make the sunsets really stunning. Here are 2 photos I took of the sunset yesterday -

And one I took this evening -

The third photo was taken with the camera set to "nightscene" which is probably why it shows the road and pavements - I think!

Note to self - re-read the camera instruction book to see what all those settings are for!

google solved the problem!

As I posted last night, I wanted to expand the white bit in the middle of my blog. I looked at the HTML code and couldn't figure which bit to change. I did change some numbers and nothing seemed to happen. Mmmm

Okay, if you can't figure stuff out, you look it up on google. So I searched for "how do I widen my blog post" and wow - so many results. I read through a few which actually just told people to widen their blogs but didn't actually say how to do it - not very helpful!!

Then I clicked on here - Genius! It just told you which bit to find in the HTML code and which numbers to change.

I used the numbers they suggested - 860 and 610 - but the white bit was actually too wide so I change mine to 810 and 560 and here it is. I'm now a happy bunny! :o)

Now today's problem is italic text. Firefox did an upgrade when I switched on my computer this morning and now every time I post a post or write an e-mail the text is in italics. Not that big a deal but it's annoying.

I wonder if I can find out what to do to sort it on google? Probably! :oD

Edited to add - it did! Apparently I had the wrong fonts as default fonts. I've changed them to what Mozilla/Firefox said they should be and voilà, no italic text. Go me - and go google! :oD

new look

I found a link to some blog backgrounds and decided to try one out. I must admit I quite like it.

I would like to make the white bit in the middle wider but have decided that's not a job for this time of night. I was trying to make sense of the HTML codes and my eyes were starting to cross.

Maybe, if I have a look at it tomorrow, it might make more sense to me. Or maybe not! :oD

anything rather than snow!!

I decided to stop blogging about the snow and then, maybe the snow will get the message that I am well and truly sick of it and it'll go away. Mind you, according to the weather forecasters, we can expect it to stay around for another 3 weeks - oh and our council has allegedly run out of grit. Sheesh!

Anyway, no snow-blogging any more. So what to blog about? Well, I found another list of questions I'd saved from somewhere with a view to posting them one day. So today is going to be that day.

Actually, today I'm only going to answer some of the questions - there are 50 of them altogether. No way am I doing 50 questions in one go - and I suspect anyone who reads this would get bored long before I got to 50!! :oD

So let's do 1 to 10 and leave the rest for another day when I'm trying to ignore the snow!

1. Are you wearing a hat?
Why would I be wearing a hat? I'm inside! So, no, I am not wearing a hat. (I can see this is going to be one of "those" quizzes!)

2. Bottled water?
Only in foreign countries.

Douglas? Am I allowed to have a crush on my husband of 30 years?

4. What kind of computer do you have?
An iMac. Macs rule!

5. Do you prefer writing in pen or pencil?
I write my shopping list in pen but I do sudokus in pencil so I can rub them out and start again when I mess up! Which I invariably do!

6. Who was the last message in your inbox from?
pccrafter. I had bought some kits this afternoon (oops, blogging about it doesn't keep it under my hat - which I'm not wearing - does it?) and this was the confirmation e-mail.

7. What's your favourite season?
At this precise moment it's spring or summer or autumn - definitely NOT winter! Ask me after the snow that I'm not blogging about has gone and the answer might be different. :oD

8. Does your best friend have a girlfriend or boyfriend?
Well, since my best friend is the afore-mentioned hubby of 30 years, I'd have to say no … to both of those!

9. Do you like tea?
Yep. Hot tea.

10. Favourite radio station?
BBC Radio 2

more snow!!!!!!!!!

I just took this about 20 minutes ago. In the dark - by the light of the outside light.

It wasn't forecast. In fact, even now the BBC website says we're going to have a very cold, dry night. Em, not happening here!!!

Now, don't get me wrong - I like snow as much as the next child does but, please, make it go away!!!!

new year walk 2010

Every New Year's Day we try to go for a walk. Because of the awful weather we've had over the last wee while, we weren't sure if we were going to manage this year but we did.

We headed down to the beach but the tide was in so we couldn't get down on the sand - although, as can be seen from the video, Rosie had a good try!

You can see quite clearly how slippery it was. Even the salty air from the sea hasn't managed to melt the ice!

This is the view of the winter sun. It was 11am so this was as bright as the day was going to get!

Jo checking to see if we could get down on the sand.

Looked like it was snowing over on the other side of the river.

Rosie - just because I liked the photo!

And finally the video showing Rosie looking longingly at the sea - with a wee bit of encouragement from Jo - and then deciding that maybe mum had the better idea staying well away! :oD
