I got some!

I don't know why I didn't think to go further along the High Street yesterday to check out a long-established independent shoe shop but I didn't. I did think of it this morning and got some shoes in there.

Here's what they look like:

I put them on as soon as I got home with the intention of wearing them in. They are sooooooooo comfortable! I'm a bit like a child with a new toy - I'm wondering if I'll be allowed to go to bed with them on. :oD

Don't ask how much they cost. Let's just say it's the most I have EVER paid for a pair of shoes in my whole life. But, if they stay as comfy as they are, that money will have been well spent!

And I'm sure Douglas won't mind living on bread and cheese for a wee while! :oD

can't buy shoes?

We're going to Ireland for a holiday at the beginning of June so I decided I'd go and buy myself some good shoes to wear so that I could wear them in before we go. By "good" I mean shoes that are comfy but also look good if I wear trousers or cropped trousers. They're probably be leather and a creamy colour or at least a light colour - not black!

So, yesterday I did some research online and found a couple of pairs from Clarks that might do the biz. I also checked out Marks & Spencer and found a pair on there that I actually liked better. So my plan was to go down the street this morning, look at the ones in M&S. If they fit the criteria and I liked them, I'd buy them. If not, I'd go along to the Clarks shop.

Well, M&S didn't have the shoes. No real surprise there as our branch is not that big and - heck, let's be honest - it's stool sample! (tee hee)

So, off to the Clark's shop. I couldn't see the shoes I was after on the shelves so I asked at the desk. The assistant looked up her catalogue "I can order you anything from this for you, if you like" and, would you believe it, the shoes I'd seen online weren't in there. So she couldn't order them for me! Eh??

I came home and decided I'd just order the M&S ones online and take them back to the shop if they didn't fit. Blow me - they didn't have my size in any other colour than black! So I decided to try the Clarks site again - down for maintenance.

Who'd have thought it would be so much bother to buy shoes???

coffee with Kofi?

I had to go to a Singers committee meeting before our rehearsal last night and wondered why the car park was so full. I just thought a lot of people had turned up for the Weight Watchers' meeting before ours and thought no more of it.

When I walked into the church, there were people milling everywhere. There were 2 girls dressed in black who were taking people's coats and hanging them on a rail and a man with a camera with a HUGE lens on it. Not all of those people were overweight so I then thought it might not be for the Weight Watchers after all. But, again, I went on my merry way thinking no more of it.

I went to the room where we were having our committee meeting and, although we made a few comments that the car park was unusually busy, none of us knew why it was like that.

After the meeting we moved into the hall where we rehearse for Singers and I overheard someone mentioning coffee for Kofi Annan. I remember thinking "what?" but, thought I must have misheard and forgot all about it.

Then this morning, Joanna found this on the BBC website - Kofi Annan lectures in Kirkcaldy

Goodness me! He really was coming for coffee! We could have sung for him! How exciting might that have been?

great hair day!!

I was at the hairdresser today and was a teeny bit apprehensive about what would happen. If you remember from 6 weeks ago, my hairdresser left and I was having a new girl do my hair - new to me. She's been there for a long time!

When I walked in she sat me in the chair and asked me what I wanted. Did I like the way my hair was sitting? Was there anything she could do to make it easier for me to work with? It was amazing.

I came out of the hairdressers a very happy person. She cut my hair as *I* wanted it - shorter and thinned out. And she was not one of those talkative, chatty people either. I loved it!

Thanks, Lorna! I'll be back! :o)

not gout

I had a telephone appointment with the doctor this morning to get to the bottom of the blood test I had taken on April 1st. You have no idea how many times "April Fool" has gone through my head during the last 3 weeks! Every flipping time I've phoned for the results I was waiting for someone to shout it at me!!

Anyway, the time he was meant to phone was 11.15am but he didn't call until 11.35am. Okay, fair enough. We know appointments over-run and such but at least say "I'm sorry I'm a wee bit late" or something!

Okay, so. I had to explain why I'd asked for a phone appointment and said I just wanted the results of the blood test. He looked it up and, sure enough, it wasn't on the computer! He did some searching and found it and, as I expected, no, I don't have gout!

In fairness to Dr. B., he did go on to ask me how I was doing and how things were in general etc etc. He also asked if I'd got a hospital appointment yet and, when I told him it wasn't until the 13th of May, he seemed really pleased that it was so soon!

Oh, and he explained to me that the reason the results of the test weren't available was that the hospital computer was acting up at the time it was taken and lots of stuff got lost! My immediate thought? I hope they haven't lost the results of my smear test! I think I will scream if they have!!!

It's late! Oh well, here's the latest back door photo. The white blob seems to enjoy taking a starring role in them these days! :o)

Everything's greening up nicely! Yay!

Selkirk Bannock

I made a Selkirk Bannock last night. It's basically a fruit bread. I don't think I kneaded mine long enough as it's not light and airy as I think it should be but it tastes very yummy. Next time I make it, I might put it into the bread machine to do the kneading - why have a dog and bark yourself? - then take it out to shape it into a ball.

Here's the photo:

And the recipe:

Selkirk Bannock

250g (8oz) plain strong white flour
½ tsp salt
40g (1½ oz) butter
40g (1½ oz) sugar
150ml (¼ pt) warm milk
7g dried yeast = 1 packet
250g (8oz) sultanas
beaten egg to glaze

200ºC fan, 425ºF, GM7

Sift the flour, salt, sugar and yeast into a bowl and rub in the butter. Make a well in the centre. Put the warm milk into the well and bring together to make a smooth dough.

Knead for about 10 minutes and shape into a ball. Put it on to a lined baking sheet and put in a warm place for about 1½ - 2 hours to allow it to rise.

Paint with beaten egg and bake in a preheated oven for about 25 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. Keep it in an airtight tin - if it lasts that long!

she's got talent!

I don't watch any of those "talent" shows on the telly because, let's face it, most of the people on them don't have any talent! And it's embarrassing to watch them make fools of themselves on national tv.

Well, this lady DOES have talent. She is A-MA-ZING! Watch it and weep!

the blood results

When I was at the nurse for my smear test 2 weeks ago, I asked her what she thought of the big toe on my left foot and did she think it was worth making an appointment at the doctor? My big toe was/is swollen. I had thought it was the result of wearing new shoes to Fiona's wedding but this was now 3 weeks since that event and I really didn't think it would last that long if it had been that.

Anyway, she looked, asked a few questions and offered to do a blood test for gout. My dad had had gout so I wasn't too surprised about that. So, she took some blood and told me to phone the next week for the results.

I phoned last week and was first told the results weren't back. I then phoned back the next day and the results were back but the doctor hadn't made any notes on them. Well, this was the Thursday before Good Friday so I had to wait until yesterday - Tuesday - to phone again.

I phoned yesterday and got yet another person and she couldn't find the results. She offered to dig through the system to find out what was going on and would I phone back today?

So, I did. And guess what? The results have been there since the first time I phoned but the doctor has written notes on them which made no sense. Says something about them "being high but not as high as before". Eh?

The person today asked me if I wanted to speak to the doctor? Yes, please. I can't - he's on holiday! Sheesh!

Bottom line - the doctor will phone me next Tuesday morning at 11.15am to discuss this blood test.

You know what? It's a good job it's "only" gout I was being checked for and not some life-threatening thing!

update on the marmalade

It worked! It looks - and smells - soooooo good! :o)

I finally persuaded mum that, at 80 and counting, it might be time to stop making jam and marmalade. Not because she can't make it but more because of the heat of the liquid in that huge pan! It doesn't bear thinking about!

So, this afternoon I'm going to make some marmalade. It has to be this afternoon because the pulp has to soak for 24 hours and I did all the pulping yesterday afternoon.

The recipe I'm using is my Granny's recipe - Dad's mum. My mum has been making this marmalade for as long as I can remember and probably longer. That's at least 53 years of mum using her MIL's marmalade recipe. Not too shabby!

Anyway, I've been making jam since we got married so I'm sure I can make marmalade. And the idea of carrying on the tradition for another generation makes me happy, for some reason.

If it turns out well, I'll post photos. If not, I'll deny all knowledge of any marmalade making plans! :oD

life as I know it

Every Sunday, in the magazine that comes with our Sunday newspaper, there's an interview with a "celebrity" asking them various questions. I suppose the idea is that we get to know that celebrity a bit better but that's kind of hard when, more often than not, I've never heard of her/him.

Anyway, I thought I'd do my own abridged version of the "life as I know it" interview.

If I could change one thing about myself I'd … like doing exercise. I'm sure it would make losing weight much easier!

If I can, I always try to avoid … bad-mannered people. It's the one thing I totally hate! There is NO excuse for bad manners - no matter where, who, why etc etc

When I was a child I wanted to be … an archaeologist! One of my mum's friends bought me a "Teach Yourself Archaeology" book for my 12th birthday. It was as dry as dust and it put me off the idea really quickly! LOL

I drive … a Ford Ka.

To wake myself up I … set the alarm!

My "happy place" is … home. I often think I could be a hermit as I'm perfectly happy in my own house.

The song I can't get out of my head is …White Winter Hymnal by the Fleet Foxes. I heard it on the radio last week and it's such a simple song with only one verse but I love the close harmonies.

My last meal would be … roast chicken with all the trimmings followed by steamed sponge pudding with custard. YUM!!

I think I might steal!

I was reading one of my favourite blogs the other day - The Pioneer Woman - and she was talking about her brother, Mike, stalking her on the phone. He had been phoning her all day and she answered him the first 3 times with various answers - and I quote:

Call #1: “Good morning, this is Hooters, how may I help you?”

Call #2: “Pizza Hut, this is Tammy, would you like to hear about our specials?”

Call #3: “911, what is your emergency?”

I have decided that, whenever I get one of those calls where they want to sell me kitchen units or car insurance or just want to know who provides us with electricity, I am going to use Ree's 3rd answer. Funny enough in America but I think it would be especially funny here in Scotland! bwa ha ha

relaxed? ha!

I was at the nurse this morning for my tri-annual smear test. (Is tri-annual a word? I'm not sure!)

I got my blood pressure taken - that's come down a lot in the last 3 years - go me! I also got weighed - yikes! Let's not go there, okay? And then on to the bed for the smear test.

I wonder if there's any woman out there who is comfortable getting a smear test done? I've been getting them done for a long time now - must be at least 28 years - and I still can't relax! Even though I know what's going to happen and that it's not going to hurt, being relaxed is not an option!

Oh well, at least I won't have to get it done for another 3 years! Now there's a relaxing thought! :o)
